Classroom Look-In: Drums
Mr. Ryan (left) works with student band leader Syre (right) and Dasani (center) on the drum beat for Dua Lipa’s high energy pop song, “Don’t Start Now”.
Forming the backbone of the Milbank Band’s rhythm section is no easy task! These young artists have been working steadily week after week to master their individual drum parts and how they fit into the larger context of the ensemble.
Syre has been with the Milbank Band for three years as a musical leader and core member. As a mentor to the next generation of Milbank drummers, she helps younger artists learn the ensemble’s repertoire and hone their skills - keeping time, setting the groove, and outlining song structure. Here, in a sectional rehearsal, this small group is working on technique and musicality together - Syre is showing Dasani the nuances of a technique called “cross-sticking”, while Mr. Ryan outlines the harmony.
